Issaquah History

The area now called Issaquah was initially a small mining and logging town. Originally called Gilman, the City of Issaquah was incorporated on April 29, 1892. At that time, the residency was dominantly mine workers in Tiger Mountain. When the need for mine workers waned due to consumption of the available deposits, the next industry to move in were lumber companies. Rail service was used to transport lumber from the region to nearby Seattle and other local communities in western Washington state. When lumber business declined during the Great Depression, Issaquah became more of a bedroom community for workers at The Boeing Company. The first seaplane Boeing ever built was completed by Issaquah residents and even made its first takeoff from the shore of Lake Sammamish in Issaquah. In the progressing years, technology companies like Microsoft grew in nearby Redmond and continued to provide jobs for the residents of Issaquah. In 1996, Issaquah happily became home to Costco as they moved from nearby Kirkland. Now one of the fastest growing communities in the state, Issaquah is draw not just for living, but for work and play as well!
